  4. ***** Why Fakïr?
  5.  
  6.     Fakïr is a null program, that does absolutely nothing. "Why would I want such a program?" you may ask. The value in having it around is to alert the Finder to the types of documents you may have around which are not owned by any other application on the hard drive. Thus, instead of the windows reading "document" and showing the blank page for an icon you can make them say "WordPerfect document" or "JPEG document," and give such types of files individual icons to discriminate between them- this helps in organization before you decode or translate them. If you have files coming in consistently from, say, a partner at work, and he writes in Microsoft Word, but you use MacWrite Pro, you can install Fakïr and have all his Word files properly labeled with the Word icon and name.

  8.     You can also make multiple copies of Fakïr, to deal with different types of files. If you download from the Internet a batch of new files, you can read more specifically what they are, from right within the Finder.

  10. ***** How to Install Fakïr

  12.     Installation requires ResEdit, a system utility from Apple. For those of you who Understand, just rename Fakïr and change its creator to those of the application you want it to mimic. Edit the BNDL resource for the appropriate icons, save, and rebuild the desktop file.

  14.     For the rest of you:    For example, if you want to recognize GifConverter’s GIF files, change Fakïr’s name to “GifConverter” and open it with ResEdit. Choose “Get Info for [name of file]” from the File menu. Change the “Creator:” field to read “GCon” and close the box. Save changes as the program asks. Then open the BNDL resource and the one resource in it. Enter in the “Signature:” field “GCon”– the same creator type you just typed in. Then, in the Type column, enter the four-letter file type of the GIF files, which happens to be GIFf. Then double-click on the set of blank icons and press the “New” button. Then you may paste in or create new icons for the GIF files. Do the original large, in the most colors you have available, then drag it into the other blank spaces. Save and quit ResEdit.

  16.     The final step is to reboot your Mac and hold down the option and command keys as it loads. You'll see a dialog box asking you if you want to rebuild the desktop file and go ahead with it. Only after doing this will the Finder recognize any files with your Fakïr application.

  18.     To install multiple copies of Fakïr, duplicate it and perform the above process for each copy; the desktop rebuilding needs to be done only once, at the end of your copying and modifying.
